Paper Trap vs. Venus Fly Trap

Image
Paper Trap vs. Venus Fly Trap A typical dust collection hood on a paper converting line is designed to collect small particles of dust. During the process to make toilet paper, larger chunks of tissue get torn off and sucked into the hoods. These large chunks are then taken to a dust collector (RACF or bag house) and will clog or blind the filter media. When this happen it increase the number of times the filters have to be maintained or cleaned. How do we keep this from happening? To increase the service life of the collector we have developed a Paper Trap (see figure below) to catch these larger pieces before they get on the media. Much like a Pre-Separator before a drum filter the Paper Trap would have a screen/mesh housed inside a cabinet that goes before the collector. When the screen becomes clogged a pressure indicator would rotate the screen down and empty the large chunks into a hopper and tote below. This cleaning cycle will last a few minutes then return t...

Troubleshooting Fan Speeds

Image
Troubleshooting Fan Speeds Let’s say you are out in the field doing some troubleshooting on an air system fan, or any other type of motor-driven sheave (pulley) system, and you need to determine fan revolutions per minute or RPMs.   The easiest way is to measure the RPM with your tachometer.  You reach into your tool bag only to remember that you let a team member borrow it and they have not yet returned it.  Not to worry because you always have a backup-plan – math! You can use the following formula to determine the fan RPM: Find These Variables ·                      Record the motor RPM from the motor tag ·                      Measure the motor (driver) sheave diameter in inches ·         ...

Quite often in the context of S.T.E.M (Science. Technology. Engineering. Math), you might read stories or see initiatives from the standpoint of the S.T.E.M working professionals, students, mentors, affinity groups, etc. However, very seldom might you have an opportunity to hear from a S.T.E.M impacted Business Owner, more specifically, a Black Woman Business Owner, with over 30 years of experience. As is the case with Mrs. Icy Williams. Through writing this blog, I came to realize, in comparison, how little visibility there is around the Business Owners of S.T.E.M impacted markets and wondered, how we as a society could do better in recognizing and learning from this wealth of knowledge that seemingly goes unnoticed. With this in mind, I took a particular interest in learning more about Icy Williams' journey, including lessons learned, from the perspective of  Owning S.T.E.M. Cincinnati, Ohio, based  ATMOS360  is an Engineering, Design...
